Mistake-Proof Your ‘10 Mistakes’ Article

Everyone says you need a 10 Mistakes (or “key issue”) article, but how to start? What to write about? And WHY do they keep insisting you have one?

The 10 Mistakes article is one of the most valuable, versatile pieces of marketing currency you can have. It’s what you send when someone is interested in your services but still undecided. It’s the perfect excuse for keep-in-touch marketing. It can be a free download from your website, or catnip for getting new sign-ups for your ezine. You can get it published on other high-traffic websites to help drive traffic to your home page. It does everything except the dishes.

It’s an essential client magnet. Every business should have at least one in the hopper. It’s intriguing enough to whet the appetite for your services, casual enough to be an engaging read, valuable enough to escape the Spam folder. It offers solid information on a core issue, often in the form of a bullet-point list of how to avoid common mistakes. It serves as a calling card, a bonus for joining your mailing list, a free download. It speaks to the heart of what you do.

The trouble is, the thought of writing it terrifies you. It’s been on your To-Do list forever, along with “be a better person” and “solve world hunger.” Or perhaps you’ve already written (and rewritten) it, and you’re STILL not satisfied.

In this 6-session Webinar, you’ll master the art of the snappy, informative 10 Mistakes article and look forward to writing your next one — even if you insist that you “hate” writing and just can’t do it. Also, you can take everything you learn here and apply it to almost any kind of writing in the future.

First, we’ll figure out what you’re really trying to say. Then we’ll help you find the right way to say it, without having to memorize arcane rules of grammar or go for a Ph.D. in wordsmithing. We’ll break down the article into its component parts and show you quick, painless ways to handle each one.

Mistake-Proof Your 10 Mistakes Article will change the way you think about your marketing and your writing. We’ll give you shortcuts and workarounds that will help you get past your anxiety as you craft your own 10 Mistakes article — the easiest, breeziest writing format to master. We’ll show you how to move past a zero-word count (or we’ll rein you in from the million-plus words you currently have).

By the end of this workshop, you will have a persuasive, fun-to-read (and write!) 10 Mistakes article that speaks for your business and gets the attention of clients. More important, you will enjoy the process, even if it once filled you with dread.

Other benefits you can expect:

  • Aligning the message of your article with your core purpose puts you in touch with the true value of what you have to offer;
  • You will feel empowered when you see how easy it is to extrapolate this learning to other types of writing in your business and in your life;
  • Save hundreds (even thousands!) of dollars on future fees for editors and ghostwriters.

Your 10 Mistakes article is worth the investment. It forms the backbone of your marketing message, and repays itself the first time it wins you a new client. It can be reused and repurposed for years to come, and serve as a template for future iterations as your business grows and expands.

What you get

WEEK 1: What do you really want to say?
A clear-eyed look at what makes for smoother, faster writing: Who is this article for, and why? What are you REALLY trying to say? Where is your passion? Get clarity on what your article is and is not.

WEEK 2: Find your voice
If you’re trying to “sound intelligent,” you’re probably working too hard. Learn how to warm up your voice and let your personality shine through. By the end of this session, you will have ways to sidestep anxiety and self-criticism so you can head straight to the writer’s voice that sounds and feels most natural to you.

WEEK 3: Openings, closings, & le mot juste
In a “10 Mistakes” article, the bullet points do most of the talking. What, then, goes into the intro and conclusion? Headline and subhead? Learn how to make all the pieces of your article play nice together.

WEEK 4: The art of self-editing
Even if you don’t know a dangling participle from a mixed metaphor, there are plenty of ways, both high- and low-tech, to revise and trim without “ruining” your article or creating more headaches.

WEEK 5: Dotting the i’s
The presentation of your presentation matters! Learn Best Practices for formatting — including spacing, fonts and colors — and create a template that will save you time now and in the future.

WEEK 6: Final Draft
You can now write, position, streamline, format and title a 10 Mistakes article. Bring in your final draft and observe a few edits in real time. (It’s like watching a Director’s Cut DVD!) If you still require assistance, we’ll tell you your options. By the end of this session and this workshop, you will be looking forward to writing your NEXT 10 Mistakes article!

The Barncat workshops also tap into Jami Bernard’s deep knowledge of story and structure, absorbed from analyzing thousands of movies in her 20 years as a leading film critic for New York City daily newspapers. She has been on international radio and television (on Oprah, too!), and has published thousands of articles in newspapers and magazines around the world. Among other adventures in publishing, she wrote a Lois Lane comic for DC Comics, in which Lois was based on Jami’s early career in the newsroom.

In 2008, Jami founded Barncat Publishing, Inc. to help writers and independent professionals who are struggling to finish and polish their writing. She has helped even first-time writers get top agents, including a career coach who landed a six-figure advance from a major publisher after a bidding war — all from Jami’s proposal, sample chapters and pitch letter.
